Are all sump plugs the same size? There is no universal drain plug size, but there are only a couple different sizes in common use. Auto shops do not need to replace the plug, it is almost always reuseable. The disposable part is just a sealing washer or gasket.

What is different about a sump drain plug?

The sump plug is a bolt at the base of the sump pan that is unscrewed to allow oil to be drained. The difference with this system is that the oil is pumped out of the sump pan to be stored in a separate tank before it is redistributed around the engine by an external pump – leaving the sump pan ‘dry’.

All drain pans are not designed the same which is why different drain plugs are required for different vehicles. There is as much engineering going into the oil drain plug as any other part or system on the vehicle. Some vehicles have a reinforced drain plug hole and others do not.

Do oversize oil drain plugs work?

If properly installed, an oversize oil plug is a viable ‘repair’ and much easier than pulling an engine just to replace an oil pan with a new one. If the plug seals, it will last for many years. Sometimes these will weep or drip if not done correctly, so watch for that issue.

Should I replace sump plug?

Servicing cars almost every day I would recommend replacing at least the sump plug washer every time you change the oil. I actually replace the sump plug as well where possible so the next person has a fresh head on the bolt to take off. Certain sump plugs have allen key heads which can become problematic over time.

How tight do you tighten oil drain plug?

With a wrench tighten the plug very lightly until it stops and is only snug with the pan. Then tighten the plug 1/4 turn. That’s it your done. Don’t over tighten your engine oil drain plug.

Does a sump plug need to be tight?

Your oil drain plug should be tight enough not to loosen and let all your oil drain out while you drive and that it should not be so tight that it strips the threads.
