What is TKA alignment?

What is TKA alignment?

The goal of TKA alignment is to restore the normal mechanical axis. This is not achieved however by attempting bone cuts that recreate the exact joint line between tibia and femur, which would be 3° tibial varus and 3° femoral valgus in the native knee.

What is kinematic alignment in total knee arthroplasty?

Kinematic Alignment is a customised method of positioning a knee replacement with the aim of restoring the native, pre-arthritic joint lines and rotational axes of a patients knee. While this may seem correct intuitively, this is not the way traditional total knee replacement is performed.

What is normal knee alignment?

The normal knee joint line alignment is naturally in 2° to 3° of varus compared with the mechanical axis. The primary goal of many of the alignment techniques is to achieve neutral alignment of the knee, however, neutral alignment is not always observed in healthy nonarthritic patients.

What is gap balancing?

GAP BALANCING SURGICAL TECHNIQUE. Gap balancing techniques rely on ligament releases prior to bone cuts. These ligament releases correct fixed deformities and bring the limb into the correct approximate alignment before determination of femoral component rotation.

Check your Q angle Hold your patella with your thumb and index finger and find your tibial tuberosity. If your tibial tuberosity is not relatively close to the center of your patella then that may indicate that your knee is out of alignment.

Kinematic alignment in total knee arthroplasty Kinematic alignment (KA) is an alternative philosophy for aligning a total knee replacement (TKR) which aims to restore all three kinematic axes of the native knee. Many of the studies on KA have actually described non-KA techniques, which has led to much confusion about what actually fits the defini …
